Volunteering takes a lot of time, donating takes money. But guess what? There are things you can do for next to nothing!

Foremost, if you're looking for something local, try to do your research! Many of the more prominent organizations aren't actually that good.

http://www.middlewayhouse.org/ or -your- local shelter.
Donate used cellphones, good quality items you can't/never use (check out their wishlist), carry cards with their number and information on how to get help to leave in public places. Visit daily through December and vote on that link there. They could use the $250k very badly.

http://www.monroecountycasa.org/ or -your- local branch!
If you have a lot of time or a little bit of cash. You can also spend a few moments to learn about this program and maybe mention it to friends looking for volunteer opportunities.

Read up! Know what to look for and how to report child abuse! If you see abuse, look into reporting it. Call a local center and ask them for help. Don't ever, ever, ever think, "Oh, someone else will do something." Likely, they won't because they're thinking the same thing you are.

Those of you who work with children, keep it up! I am glad to know that you're making a difference!
